EMDR Therapy

Individual Sessions and Intensives for Healing

Our histories have undeniable impact on our present. But they do not have to determine our futures.

When we experience trauma, we also experience fragmentation.

For those who have suffered from developmental trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or a significant traumatic life event, the negative effects of unprocessed trauma can linger for years, impacting everyday life in both small and hugely influential ways.

When the wounds of our past still feel fresh, it’s common for parts of ourselves to feel as if we don’t have what we need to put ourselves back together.

EMDR Therapy, or Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, provides intentional time and tools to integrate the parts of ourselves, witness our emotions, and fully reprocess them to feel more whole again.

EMDR is a highly effective, evidence-based type of therapy that is linked to significantly reducing distress related to trauma and supporting the process of integration and healing.

When implementing EMDR into sessions, I combine parts work and attachment theory to integrate all parts of self with each other.

EMDR therapy can open a space for you to:

  • Dedicate all of your attention to address the root of a traumatic experience in a solution-focused way

  • Eliminate distress, address negative thoughts and behavior patterns, and strengthen positive thoughts about yourself and your abilities

  • Allow your brain to process challenges without as much reliance on verbal processing or having to make connections with other events in your past

  • Integrate the mind and the self, while sidestepping some of the hangups of your conscious mind and letting your physiology do more of the work

Especially if you have a history of a single-event trauma, EMDR can support your brain to recognize that you don’t have to continue experiencing the symptoms of the trauma and can finally leave the distress in the past.

As an example, a single-event trauma might look like experiencing hesitation, panic attacks, and flashbacks when getting behind the wheel after a car accident. In that case, EMDR could offer a space to focus entirely on healing from that experience and work toward feeling confident to drive without the fear or distress associated with the trauma.

EMDR sessions can allow you to approach this healing on your own timeline, and, if you so choose, intensives can condense that timeline so you feel acute relief within just a few days.

Taking a gradual or intensive approach: your choice.

Within the weekly or bi-weekly schedule of therapy and even done occasionally, 50-minute EMDR sessions can offer powerful relief. Depending on your personal circumstances, preference, and history, you may want to ease into EMDR or integrate it in between other therapeutic modalities.

If you feel as though a traumatic event from your past is affecting your regular functioning and you just can’t seem to get through to the other side even with other modalities and talk therapy, EMDR intensives are potently designed to break through the blockage. Intensives are multi-day containers where you can dedicate time all at once to gain insight and help minimize the distress you’re feeling.

Whether you prefer a slower approach or accelerated healing, options exist for your care.

EMDR therapy has been clinically shown to work well for many traumatic experiences, including:

  • Infidelity, abuse, or high-conflict situations in relationships

  • Birth trauma or miscarriage

  • Death of a loved one or beloved pet

  • Physical injury, challenging medical diagnoses, and/or actively receiving invasive treatment

  • Experiencing human-caused or natural disasters, including for first responders

  • Specific instances of aggression or treatment based on racial identity, sexual orientation, or other marginalized identities

If you are ready to process your trauma and release any distress that associations cause for you, you might want to consider EMDR as a potential tool to move forward with your life with a newfound sense of clarity and ease.
